Pemalang, February 10, 2026 – The Department of International Relations, Diponegoro University (HI UNDIP), together with the Marina Team, participated in the 2026 Indonesian Fisheries Workers Jamboree organized by the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) in Asemdoyong Village, Pemalang Regency. This event served as a national consolidation forum for fisheries workers, trade unions, civil society organizations, and strategic partners to strengthen the protection of the rights of Fisheries Crew Members (AKP), particularly those working as migrants.
The participation of the HI UNDIP Department in this event was attended by International Relations lecturers and students, including Muhammad Arief Zuliyan, S.IP., LL.M., Palupi Anggraheni, S.IP., M.A., Izzatiddiena Nur Safira, Arini Emmanuella Riswanti, and I Gede Gohan Adiputra.
During panel discussions, key issues were addressed, including challenges in protecting migrant AKP, the potential for human trafficking (TPPO) in the fisheries sector, the importance of procedural migration, the climate crisis, gender perspectives, and the urgent need to strengthen the governance of Indonesian fisheries worker placement. The discussions also highlighted persistent systemic issues such as exploitative working practices, weak supervision, and the necessity of strengthening the role of trade unions as spaces for advocacy and collective protection.
The HI UNDIP Department and the Marina Team contributed as academic partners in bridging global policy perspectives—including instruments such as ILO C188 and MLC 2006—with the on-the-ground realities faced by fisheries workers. The involvement of academics and students further affirms the commitment of higher education institutions to supporting collaborative approaches in migrant worker protection.
Through this participation, the HI UNDIP Department and the Marina Team hope to strengthen collaboration with SBMI, IOM, IOJI, and other stakeholders in promoting research, advocacy, and the formulation of policy recommendations that are more responsive to the needs of Indonesian migrant AKP.
The presence of academics and students in this forum serves as a tangible reflection of the role of International Relations scholarship in humanitarian issues, migration governance, and cross-border worker protection.
