Undip International Relations Students Discuss Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Rights and Obligations with 35 Candidates at LPK Daebak Korea

Kendal – A student from the International Relations Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Diponegoro, Davino Krisna Hernawan, delivered an educational session on the rights and obligations of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) to 35 prospective migrant workers at LPK Daebak Korea, Kedunggading Village, Ringinarum District, Kendal Regency, on Monday (03/08). This activity was part of the Multidisciplinary Program 2 of the Universitas Diponegoro Team II Community Service (KKN) 2026, which focuses on enhancing prospective migrant workers’ understanding before working abroad.

The session covered materials regarding PMI rights and obligations, the importance of understanding employment contracts, as well as Occupational Safety and Health (OSH / K3) or Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). Throughout the activity, the rights and obligations of PMI served as the main focus, referencing Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers.

The material discussed several rights of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), including obtaining accurate information regarding employment and the destination country, receiving a clear employment agreement, earning wages in accordance with the contract, as well as securing legal protection and safety guarantees. Additionally, participants were introduced to the obligations of PMIs, such as complying with regulations in both Indonesia and the destination country, respecting the local culture and customs, and carrying out work according to the employment agreement.

An understanding of rights and obligations is crucial for prospective migrant workers, as they will navigate different work environments and labor systems abroad. The session also outlined the journey of prospective migrant workers—from the preparation and training phase, departure verification, through to becoming active PMIs and post-placement PMIs, as presented in the outreach material.

This activity is part of an effort to provide basic knowledge for prospective migrant workers before departure. It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by strengthening prospective migrant workers’ understanding of their rights, obligations, employment contracts, and occupational health and safety as part of their preparation for a decent and safe working environment. Furthermore, this activity supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by increasing prospective PMIs’ access to information regarding legal protection and their rights as workers.

Through this educational session, participants are expected to gain a better understanding of their rights and obligations as PMIs and to properly prepare themselves before working abroad.
