FISIP Melantur Successfully Holds Inclusive Discussion, Encourages Students to Understand the Line Between Jokes and Verbal Harassment

Semarang, May 21, 2026 — The Social and Political Affairs Division of BEM FISIP Universitas Diponegoro has conducted the FITUR activity, also known as FISIP Melantur, serving as a relaxed yet critical discussion space for students to discuss social issues on campus. In this edition, FISIP Melantur collaborated with the Women’s Empowerment Division of BEM FH and raised the theme “Beyond Jokes: Highlighting the Normalization of Verbal Harassment on Campus,” with a primary focus on the phenomenon of catcalling, which often occurs on campus but is frequently trivialized. The event was initially planned to take place at the Back Stage of Building B, FISIP Undip, but was relocated to Kedai Fafalin due to rain. The event was attended by 20–30 participants from various faculties, predominantly from FISIP and various other student organizations.

This activity was designed as an open discussion forum that allowed participants to share experiences, perspectives, and understandings regarding the boundary between jokes and forms of verbal harassment. In its implementation, FISIP Melantur fostered an inclusive and participative atmosphere, enabling every participant to express their views without fear or judgment from others.

The discussion was guided by a moderator and a facilitator who have a strong concern for gender issues and safe spaces on campus. The discussion covered how catcalling is often normalized in daily interactions, the psychological impact it has on victims, and the importance of collective awareness in creating a safer and more respectful campus environment.

Through FISIP Melantur, it is hoped that students will not only understand that verbal harassment is not merely a joke but will also be able to critically examine the culture that often allows such practices to persist. This discussion serves as a small step toward building collective awareness that the campus space should be a safe, comfortable, and violence-free environment, including verbal violence.

FISIP Melantur is not just a space for sharing but also a platform for collective reflection to encourage changes in attitudes and culture on campus, fostering greater sensitivity, empathy, and responsibility in interacting with others.
