UNDIP Business Administration Department Designs Site Plan for Tourism-Based Green Micro-Business Hub in Rowo Pening

Semarang, 2026 – The Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), has conducted a Community Service program focused on drafting a site plan design based on customer flow and tenant mix. This initiative aims to support the development of a Green Micro-Business Hub rooted in community-based tourism in the Rowo Pening area, Kesongo Village, Tuntang District, Semarang Regency. This activity serves as a practical implementation of faculty expertise in business sustainability and business operational management, while simultaneously strengthening community capacity for sustainable, community-based tourism development.

This program is designed as a contextual learning medium for lecturers and students to apply concepts of customer experience, customer flow, tenant mix, and green business operations within the framework of developing a tourism area based on local MSMEs. Broadly, this initiative aims to assist the community and village government in creating a more integrated and structured business district design, intended to enhance the visitor experience and boost the transaction potential of local businesses.

Kesongo Village possesses diverse community business potential, ranging from cassava and banana chip MSMEs, fish farming, and bamboo craftsmanship to communal goat farming and angkringan (traditional food stalls) featuring panoramic views of Rowo Pening. However, these various assets have yet to be integrated into a well-organized tourism business concept. Consequently, the visitor experience remains suboptimal, and opportunities for local economic development have not been fully maximized.

The project was implemented in stages using a participatory and partner-needs-based approach. The process began with coordination and socialization sessions with the village government and MSME actors, followed by field observations and the mapping of community business potential. The subsequent stages involved Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), the development of alternative site plan designs, the finalization of customer flow and tenant mix layouts, and the formulation of green operations and area management concepts.

This program focuses on designing a more structured visitor flow to increase interaction and transaction opportunities at every MSME tenant. Furthermore, the design of the tenant mix and business zoning aims to create synergy among business actors, allowing the area to evolve into a tourism hub centered on local products and community-based tourism.

Regarding the green business aspect, the activities were also directed toward developing eco-friendly operational concepts through the arrangement of waste sorting points, the creation of educational signage, and the implementation of simple, cost-effective eco-packaging concepts. The service team also assisted in drafting operational governance documents to serve as a guide for gradual implementation by the village government and MSME groups.

The results of this program led to the finalized operational site plan design for the Green Micro-Business Hub, based on customer flow and tenant mix, which can serve as a blueprint for developing local MSME-based tourism in Kesongo Village. Furthermore, this initiative has increased community understanding of the importance of integrated, collaborative business area management that is oriented toward environmental sustainability.
