Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) has successfully completed the revitalization of the library building, both in terms of physical infrastructure and service systems. Therefore, the UPT Undip Library organized a socialization event for library and Undip Press services on Friday, August 4, 2023. The event was attended by Vice-Deans for Academic and Student Affairs, Heads of Study Programs, and faculty librarians.

The revitalization activity was deemed necessary as the library serves as the ‘heart’ of the university or institution offering higher education. In comparison to primary and secondary education, the role of the library in higher education is far more critical, as it is an essential requirement in the three pillars of higher education (education, research, and community service). The quality of these processes depends significantly on the reliability of the library network as a reference source.

In his address, Prof. Budi Setiyono, Ph.D., the Vice Rector for Communication and Business, emphasized that Undip needed to rebuild an academic culture centered around the library. “To facilitate every educational process successfully, the function of the library needs to be understood by all members of the academic community. Neglecting the library or placing it as a low priority will result in damage and the failure to achieve learning and educational goals in general,” stated Prof. Budi. The academic library, he further explained, was a vital component (center of excellence) of literacy in developing up-to-date references for teaching, learning, and research activities.

It must be understood that in the current era, the role of libraries and librarians has evolved due to the world driven by digital technology changes. In this context, Undip’s library has made various adjustments.

Suwondo, the Head of the Undip Library and Undip Press Unit, mentioned that in terms of physical facilities, the library had been equipped with millennial-themed spaces, allowing students to engage in activities in a relaxed, spacious, and clean environment. They find it comfortable to spend extended periods in the library. Additionally, the library is supported by a strong and fast internet network. Undip’s subscribed reference database, including journals and electronic books, has also expanded.

“This has led to an increase in student visits from around 300 individuals per day to over 1000 individuals. The duration of their visits has also extended from less than 1 hour on average to over 3 hours,” Suwondo said.
