“Department of Communication Science is still one of the most popular learning programs by prospective new students. This is because communication itself is one of the fields that are very close to everyday life, so it is growing and is always needed. The Department of Communication Science is a research project that studies how to process messages effectively to achieve the desired goal,” said Erik Saropie, Alumni of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro.
“In addition, the Communication Department studies different levels of communication, such as between individuals and between media. What’s interesting is that the Communication Science department must deal directly with humans because we are involved in a dialogue. Not an ordinary conversation, but a meaningful conversation with specific purposes, such as lobbying and negotiation, public speaking, and persuasive communication that can influence others,” he continued.
“In lectures, the way lecturers deliver the material is varied. Sometimes, some lecturers have a way of delivering material that is clear and easy to understand by students or vice versa. As long as I studied at Undip, I felt very happy and was able to follow the material that was presented by the lecturer to us. Being a student in the Department of Communication Science, Universitas Diponegoro, made me understand more about the role of public relations and protocols in the value of government in general. I also understand the role and function of the government or the procedures for carrying out a harmonious relationship within government households and related institutions that concern on the livelihood of many people,” he said.
Erik entered Undip through the Joint Entrance Selection of State Universities (SBMPTN) in 2002 and graduated in 2006. He started his career at a national private television station on broadcast industry trends. However, in the end, he was accepted into the 2009 PNS formation, at the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, at the Sub-Directorate of Patent Examination, the Department, the Directorate of Patents, Layout Design of Integrated Circuits and Trade Secrets.
According to him, education was a process of learning knowledge and skills, which could be done anytime, anywhere. From small to large, everyone could get an education. Education was very important for everyone who aimed to educate and develop his potential. Through growth and development, everyone could have creativity, wider knowledge, a good personality and become a responsible person. Education could be carried out anywhere, such as formal education, school education, or structured education. In addition, there was non-formal education, education that was carried out besides the formal education, such as curriculum institutions (tutoring), training institutions (extracurricular), study groups, and many more.
“There is also informal education, education obtained at home or in the surroundings. Informal education is the best source of nutrition needed by aspiring professionals like us. This is mostly obtained from hanging out in a place to gather and do activities to spend the spare time. The phenomenon of hanging out itself is interesting for me because there are many basic skills that I need to build a career in my job, or at least diligence skills. Ideally, 30:70, 30% for formal knowledge and 70% for non-formal, in the application of communication science, so that the proportion of relationships between parts of formal and non-formal knowledge as a whole can be balanced and not discriminating, “he concluded.
