Semarang (12/2) – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) organized an international visiting lecturer event discussing the process of democratic transition in Southeast Asia, coinciding with the momentum of the democracy celebration in Indonesia. Dr. Thomas Seitz, a political expert from the University of Wyoming, served as the keynote speaker in the event themed “Comparing Democratic Transition in South East Asia”. In his presentation, Dr. Seitz delivered a comprehensive analysis of the democratic transition in several Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines and Thailand, supported by profound knowledge and robust research.
Additionally, two speakers from FISIP Undip, namely Prof. Dr. Hartuti Purnaweni, MPA, and Dzunuwanus Ghulam Manar, S.IP., M.Si., also contributed their perspectives to the discussion. Marten Hanura, S.IP., MPS., a lecturer from the Department of International Relations effectively moderated the discussion. The event was attended by lecturers and students from various disciplines, who not only listened to the presentations but also actively engaged in sharing their opinions. Some lecturers also participated in the Q&A session to discuss the democratic situation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia in general.
The Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin, warmly welcomed Dr. Thom and provided a brief overview of the dynamics of democracy in Indonesia. This event showcased the enthusiasm and spirit of the participants in exploring this intriguing topic. It is hoped that this discussion will not only be a routine activity but also stimulate critical thinking and serve as a starting point for further developing our understanding of democracy in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia.
