SEMARANG –Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) is among the 30 best sustainable campuses in the world in 2021, along with the other well-known universities such as Wageningen University, Leiden University and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands; the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University from the UK; the University of California and the University of Connecticut from the United States; and the Universita di Bologna Italy, the University of Southern Denmark and the Universitat Bremen Germany. From Indonesia, two universities were included in the ranks of the world’s best sustainable campuses, namely the Universitas Indonesia (ranked 24) and Universitas Diponegoro (ranked 30).
Based on the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2021, those campuses were considered to have a high commitment to environmental management. The ranking was made based on incoming data from 912 universities from 84 countries from five continents in the world.
The UI GreenMetric 2021 assessment, according to the organizers, was based on three pillars, namely the environment, economy and social with the weight of the assessment indicators consisting of Campus State and Infrastructure (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste Management (18 %), Water Use (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education and Research (18%).
Similar to the rankings carried out by other institutions, besides the overall ranking, rankings were also carried out by region, sub-region and country. There were six regions used, namely Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, North America and Latin America. Meanwhile, three sub-regions were chosen, namely ASEAN, the Middle East and the Pacific Rim. For Indonesia, a separate ranking was made, in addition to being included in the overall rating.
The Rector of Unidp, Prof. Dr. Yos Johan Utama SH Mhum, said he was grateful for the UI GreenMetric 2021 award. What Undip did, said Prof. Yos, was to provide service and do the best, so that when the results were appreciated, the word gratitude was conveyed. To be sure, Undip’s main goal in participating in various activities was not to seek rankings but to do good things.
When giving a direct response after receiving the award, Prof Yos said that the principle in development at Undip was based on two things, first was the concept of gratitude, the second was the concept of rahmatan lil ‘alamin. These two concepts were important foundations that were implemented in the awareness of preserving the environment and giving empathy to others regardless of their racial and group background.
The Chairman of the UI GreenMetric Standing Committee, Prof. Dr. Riri Fitri Sari, M.Sc., MM., when announcing the names of the best sustainable universities on Tuesday (14/12/2021), emphasized that this activity was not only about ranking but also building a strong international network. Currently, there are 32 national coordinators from 28 countries spread across Asia, Europe and America.
The national coordinators, said Prof Riri, had succeeded in holding the GreenMetric workshops in their respective countries. Along with the national coordinator, efforts were made to have a good impact on future generations. (public relations team)
