“While in High School, I took the Social Science program and I wanted to continue studying it in college. At that time, Communication was something new and booming. Honestly, I did not know anything what Communication study was about, where and what I would be. Somehow, I believed that the prospect of Communication Science would be good, that wherever and whenever I might be, Communication Science would be needed. That was what made me interested in the Communication Science study program of Universitas Diponegoro” said Esdras Idi Alfero Ginting, S.Sos, Alumni of Communication Science of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro.
Esdras entered Universitas Diponegoro in 2002 through the National Selection of State University Entrance (SNMPTN) and was graduated in 2007. During his study, he also worked in journalism.
“After I learnt about Communication, I finally got interested in journalism. It happened that I liked to write and often wrote articles in newspapers. In 2005, I worked at Wawasan evening newspaper while still studying, I also became a journalist in the art and culture section. After graduating, I still joined Wawasan until 2008. So, I had been worked on that media for more than 3 years. After that, I moved to Jogja and joined the Harian Jogja, the group of Koran Bisnis Indonesia. I worked on Harian Jogja for 2 years as a reporter and then I was promoted to assistant editor. Thus, I seldom worked in the field but more to help in the editorial field. I had also become the online editor of the Harian Jogja Website for about a year” he remembered.
“In 2012, I tried to enrol the CPNS selection. It turned out that I passed it and was placed in North Sumatra. In the fourth month of 2013, I was moved to Medan, the placement was in BNN (National Anti Narcotics Agency), Serdang Bedagai District. I, who started my career in journalism, had changed my knowledge into public speaking since that skill was required for an instructor. In 2019, I was mutated to Deli Serdang District until now as a BNN Young Expert Drug Instructor in Deli Serdang District” he continued.
According to Esdras, the communication sphere was a fabulous world with extraordinary job vacancies and the opportunities are everywhere. While in college and learning communication science, it turned out that the communication sphere was a challenging world and he was right to take the study. There was a lot of knowledge that he got from Communication, journalism, public speaking, advertising, broadcasting, and those sciences were all ready to be applied. That knowledge was all needed in the everyday life, he was so grateful to be a part of Undip Communication’s students.
“The culture of Semarang was very tolerant and friendly for students from outside the Java province like me, at a time I did learn on the Java’s cultures. I lived my life as an overseas child, which brought a lot of colours to life. In college life, I met a lot of friends from all around Indonesia with different backgrounds. During my college, I had never experienced any problem in my relationship with the lecturers. It was because they were all very friendly” he said.
“Education can change our life. I used to be very eager to go to college. I was a son of a farmer, so since I was a kid, I knew how it felt like to run life as a farmer, and honestly, I was so lazy to go to the field for I knew it would be tiresome to take care of the field. Finally, I decided to be serious about my education for at least it could change my life which from the previous lineage were farmers began to change at me or could get out of that sphere. There is something that makes me proud of being a graduate of Undip’s Communication. Every time I do counselling to schools, I give motivation to the younger generation on the importance of education as a way for them to avoid things that are not good and as a medium to pursue their dreams. Having a dream is important and you should fight for it” Esdras concluded. (Linda PR).
