Semarang—Communication Sciences Study Program has successfully held a Pre-Basic Student Management Leadership Exercise (LKMMPD) for new students of 2021. The space theme was complemented by space ornaments and the slogan “Attaining Sagacity to Prepare the Future” was expected to be the foundation for new students to progress to be better, and critical individuals.
The entire series of events took place in three stages: the first stage had been held on September 4, 2021; continued on September 11, 2021; and the closing of the event on September 18, 2021. Five speakers were presented to provide material with different themes. They were Sarah Indah (personal branding, self-potential analysis, and basic communication); Andre Wiguna (time management and entrepreneurship); Syahrul Ramadhan (trial technique); Favian Laksono (basic organization, introduction to student institutions, and teamwork); and S. Rouli Manalu, one of the Lecturers of Communication Science, brought material about the Merdeka Campus.
Preparations by Communication Science Student Association
Long before the event took place, the Communication Science Student Association had made preparations, including determining the division of the committee’s job description; dividing groups for new students; making assignments such as creating an Instagram campaign with the theme ‘Persuasive Communication’ which was presented at the end of the LKMMPD series; looking for keynote speakers according to the material given by the Student Executive Board, and carrying out rehearsals.
Participation and support from the Study Program were also given in the preparation and implementation of the LKMMPD series of events, including monitoring the continuity of the event from beginning to end, attending the event and giving welcoming remarks, signing documents, and also contributing as the speaker.
The preparations made by the Communication Science Student Association had borne fruit, as it could be seen that the LKMMPD event could run well from the beginning to the end of the session.
“Overall, I think it was a good show. It’s just because the show was online that several times there were connection problems during the presentation of the material. This is natural because it’s online, so I can conclude that this event went well and gave,” said Ismail Rabbani Rajo, one of the participants.
Preparation of New Students in LKMMPD
Before the LKMMPD activity took place, of course, some things were needed to be prepared by new students. Zayn Delisha Fitrana, one of the students of Communication Science 2021, said that he had been mentally and enthusiastically prepared before the activity began.
In line with Zayn, Ismail also put mentality as an important preparation before participating in LKMMPD activities. In addition, other preparations were no less essential; a fit physique, a supporting device, and a notebook.
LKMMPD 2021 Materials and Assignments
The presentations of material at the 2021 LKMMPD activities were very diverse, such as; time management, organizational basics, teamwork, self-branding, critical attitude, trial technique, entrepreneurship, public speaking, leadership, and materials about the Merdeka Campus.
Not only interesting material, but the group system assignments given by the committee were also very memorable and useful for each participant. Through the assignments given, new students could socialize with their classmates and seniors. The campaign assignment also provided a very valuable experience for all participants in terms of collaboration and presentation skills.
Independent Campus as a Means of Self-Development
The Merdeka Campus which was developed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology was certainly one of the programs that new students must know. Therefore, in a series of LKMMPD events, socialization about the Merdeka Campus was carried out.
Undip Communication Science targeted new students to be able to join this program with mature decisions as a means of learning and self-maturation.
“Of course, we want Communication Science’s students to see this program as a way to develop themselves. This is a program facilitated by the campus and the ministry as well. So, I hope that Communication Science’s students become more mature and rational people to see and estimate, and be responsible for themselves,” said the Head of the Undip’s Communication Science Study Program, S. Rouli Manalu.
Impressions, Messages, and Expectations of New Students 2021 After Participating in LKMMPD
Zayn conveyed that the whole event was very exciting, lively, and fun even though it was held online. Another impression also came from Ismail who said that while participating in LKMMPD, he considered the whole event to be very exciting and beneficial so that it could add insight and experience.
“My message to the committee is thank you for providing a cool LKMMPD event, also for my friends, thank you for your kindness to accompany me to get through this experience. Keep up the spirit and always be aware that we can do the best for ourselves as long as there is effort and trust,” added Zayn.
The participants hoped the material given by the speakers could be applied in their lives as students, develop together, and be closer to the entire Communication Science family. Another hope was that next year’s LKMMPD could be more fun and successful.
Expectations of the Communication Science HMPS in the Implementation of the 2021 LKMMPD
As the committee, the Communication Student Association hoped that new students could find it helpful in providing provision to spread positivity to the environment and create memorable and beneficial events. Like the initial goal of LKMMPD – present to prepare new students of Communication Science in facing the world of lectures and help introduce the culture and environment that existed at Universitas Diponegoro.
Expectations of Communication Science Lecturers with the Implementation of LKMMPD
LKMMPD could be said as the first gateway before new students could actively immerse themselves in various kinds of student activities. Although participating in similar organizations or activities was not a requirement set by the campus, the debriefing contained in the LKMMPD was important for the good and readiness of new students to take other steps.
“I, as the administrator, welcome it because there is some kind of direction or insight given to new students in starting their participation in various student organizations. From the themes, regarding soft skills, teamwork, time management, I think they are good and must be given to the students because after all to be able to effectively participate in student organizations and complete their studies, responsibility is very necessary, “ said S. Rouli Manalu.
Through the implementation of the LKMMPD 2021, it was expected to be a reflection as well as a trigger for new students in having a day in the lecture environment as well as one of the basic considerations or preparation references for them while choosing an organization that suited their interests, the aim of which was to develop themselves and contribute optimally.
“I hope that Communication Science’s students think rationally in choosing an organization. In short, I want this LKMMPD to make the new students well-informed, have a lot of knowledge, see themselves, see their talents, and see what the campus organization is,” she added.
