SEMARANG —Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) is able to maintain its presence in the honourable position in the world universities rankings conducted by THE World University Ranking (WUR) in 2022. Of all universities in Indonesia that are included in the monitoring of THE WUR 2022, Undip is ranked 7th nationally.

Meanwhile, globally, Undip is in the 1,200+ group with several well-known universities in Indonesia such as Universitas Gajah Mada, Universitas Brawijaya, Institut Pertanian Bogor (now using the name IPB University), Universitas Padjajaran, dan Universitas Airlangga. Global ranking by Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR) 2022 involves 1,600 universities spread across 99 countries and regions.

On various occasions, the Rector of Undip, Prof. Dr. Yos Johan Utama SH MHum, always appreciates the results of rankings carried out by international and national institutions, including the results of the rankings made by THE WUR. “We accept it gratefully because whatever it is is the result of efforts that are not easy. However, we need to emphasize that the entire Undip academic community will not stop trying to improve our performance, and the ranking results is one of the inputs that we use for our evaluation materials, “said Prof Yos Johan, Friday (3/9/2021).

With this achievement, Undip is recorded as being able to maintain its honourable position in the ranks of the 10 best universities in Indonesia in two consecutive years of ranking. In THE WUR of 2021 which was published last September, this university that is based in Semarang is also in the ranks of the 10 best universities in Indonesia.

To make the ranking, THE WUR uses the same indicators as those used in 2021, namely using five main indicators. They are teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook. Then, it also uses the ratio of lecturers and students, the portion of foreign students (international), the ratio of male and female students, and FTE (full-time equivalency).

As a note, this year’s results show that universities that publish research in the field of Health, especially on Covid-19, have a significant increase in citations, although it is not clear whether this increase in citation aspects will change the existing higher education hierarchy. The THE data team’s analysis identifies 19 higher education institutions that show a high increase in citation scores from 2021-2022, 11 of which are from China, one from Taiwan and the other from Hong Kong.

The institutions with the biggest jump in citations are Capital Medical University, Wenzhou Medical University and Wuhan University, all of which are in China and show an increase of up to 30 points. This increase in citations is part of a big trend in China, and mostly happens at elite universities.

David Watkins, Head of Data Science Department at THE said research related to Covid and especially related to vaccines was very heavily funded and prioritized, some articles received more than 20,000 citations within a year after they were published. While the results of the study by Caroline Wagner, Head of International Cooperation at Ohio State University, concluded that the main areas related to Covid were articles written by institutions in China and leading universities in the United States or England.

On a global scale, Oxford University of England tops the overall rankings and has held this position for the sixth year in a row. California Institute of Technology and Harvard University both come in the second position. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the UK which has approximately 20,000 students with a relatively equal composition between undergraduates and postgraduates. The University has staff from 100 countries and 40% of its students come from various countries.

California Institute of Technology has its own uniqueness because the number of its students is relatively small compared to other universities. They have 1,000 undergraduate students and 1,250 masters and doctoral students. Caltech has six departments with a strong emphasis on science and technology teaching and research. This institution was established in 1891 as Throop University and it changed to Caltech in 1920. Harvard University, which is also in second place, is one of the Ivy League, a group of top private universities in the United States. Harvard, which was established in 1636, is the oldest university in the country. (public relations team)
