Semarang—Universitas Diponegoro has finished holding a series of New Student Admissions events which were closed with the successful implementation of Character Education and Diponegoro Muda Orientation on August 19-21, 2021. After being officially declared as an Universitas Diponegoro student, the new students of Communication Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Diponegoro started the beginning of the 2021/2022 Odd Semester lectures on Monday, August 23, 2021.

In the 2021/2022 Odd Semester lectures, Universitas Diponegoro, especially the Communication Science study program, is still implementing online or virtual learning systems for teaching and learning activities. A set of pages supporting student activities, such as Undip SIAP, Single Sign On (SSO), and Undip Kulon are important aspects that students must prepare to support the online learning activities.

Although lectures are still conducted online, students must still prepare themselves for the learning process, either from the devices they use or mental and physical readiness.

One of the new students of the 2021 Communication Science study program, Ardelia Yasmine, or who is often called Ayas, admitted that as a student it was better to prepare yourself more thoroughly so that you could follow the lectures smoothly.

“As a new student, you must first be mentally prepared. The problem is that you have to get rid of the old habits from high school so you have to adjust to the lectures to avoid the culture shock. You also have to prepare the electronic devices, such as laptops, cellphones, and wifi to be able to study online comfortably without any problems, “explained Ayas.

Responding to her readiness to undergo the beginning of the lecture, M. Nur Ardi Handayat or the so-called, Ardi, who was also a new student in Communication Studies, agreed with Ayas on the importance of preparing supporting devices, such as laptops and webcams to ‘fight’ in the online lectures. In addition, Ardi emphasized that time management and stationery were equally important to support the smooth running of the lectures.

“Time management is necessary. At first, I was a little surprised, the schedule of the courses was different every day, the distance per subject was far too. So, I prepare good time management, get used to not procrastinating, and always pay attention to the schedule. In addition, stationery. I prepared a writing utensil to record the material presented by the lecturer. I think online notes on a laptop are enough, but the feeling of writing is different, it absorbs more in the brain when writing through a notebook,” said Ardi.

In addition to preparing for lectures, both mentally and physically, learning tools, such as student account pages (SSO, SIAP, Kulon) also need to be studied by new students so that they can master the technical use of the application. However, there are still problems with online lectures, such as the unpreparedness of Kulon, or the difficulty of accessing SSO because many users are using it simultaneously.

“If for Ms. Teams and SIAP function pretty well, there are rarely serious problems, except for the poor network, but for Kulon, it is still very difficult to access, the server is often down,” said Ayas.

Ardi as a new student also complained about the same thing, which was related to the unprepared Undip Kulon page at the beginning of the 2021/2022 Odd Semester lectures. “Kulon still can’t be able to accessed, he said, it’s under repair, next week it might only be accessible,” he said.

After almost two years of online lectures, Undip’s lecturer in Communication Science, Dr. Yanuar Luqman, S.Sos., M.Sc., also admits that there are obstacles that do not only occur when accessing student activity support pages but also in matters relating to teaching and practice needs that should be done in the laboratory to achieve results of learning.

“There are several courses that require practice, for example, Studio Production, Video Production, which have a lot of practical content that should be done in the laboratory, so they can’t. Other obstacles, so far, have been used so that they can be overcome. Incidentally the first week of college, the problem is the new students who are not yet proficient at using SIAP and SSO. Yesterday, we asked for the absence of the QR code, it was still a problem. So, the mastery needs to be improved and it must be more familiar,” he explained.

However, some of these problems have been corrected. So, it is hoped that the class schedule in the future can run more smoothly.

“Hopefully the pandemic will end soon, want to experience Undip’s offline facilities which look very beautiful to try. I hope that facilities like SIAP can be published on IOS, and mas and madam lecturers can only send attendance in the form of a barcode because if you use a link, you get an error, you often fail to be absent,” said Ardi.

“One week of lectures, the overall impression is really good because the lecturers are usually fun and teach cool, rarely boring. I hope Communication Science lecturers can continue to be healthy, enthusiastic about teaching, and for facilities, hopefully, Kulon will not have the server down so that it can be used immediately,” continued Ayas.
