SEMARANG, May 29, 2026 – The Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro, through the Media Communication, Journalism, and Gender Academic Expertise Cluster, organized an Undip Global Classroom featuring Dr. Fiona Suwana from Adelaide University, Australia, as a guest speaker for the Political Economy of Media course in the Master of Communication Science Program.
The session, titled “Structuration as an Entry Point to Analyze Political Economy of Media,” was opened by the Dean of FISIP UNDIP, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin., and attended by the course lecturer, Dr. Drs. Sunarto, M.Si.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Drs. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin., emphasized that the Undip Global Classroom program is part of FISIP UNDIP’s commitment to providing internationally oriented learning experiences.
“The presence of international scholars through this program is expected to broaden students’ global perspectives while strengthening their understanding of various issues at the international level,” he stated.

During her lecture, Dr. Fiona explained how Vincent Mosco’s political economy of media approach can be used to understand power relations within digital media ecosystems. Through the concepts of commodification, spatialization, and structuration, participants were encouraged to analyze the roles of digital platforms, governments, political actors, and society in the production and distribution of information.
“Information is never entirely neutral. We need to continuously ask who produces information, under what political and economic conditions it is produced, and who ultimately benefits from it,” Dr. Fiona explained.
The program is expected to enrich students’ perspectives and strengthen their ability to analyze communication and media issues from a global standpoint while providing an internationally oriented learning experience.
