The Student Association of Business Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Diponegoro, held Forum Discussion (FOCUS) 1 with the theme “Current Economic Conditions of Indonesia: Opportunities and Challenges Amid Global Dynamics.” The event, which took place in the FISIP Undip Seminar Room, Tembalang Campus, successfully brought together student enthusiasm to discuss national economic conditions.
Forum Discussion (FOCUS) 1 was held to enhance students’ understanding of the direction of Indonesia’s economic growth and its impact on society and the workforce. The event served as a response to various ongoing global challenges, such as global inflation, geopolitical conflicts, and fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate.
In the initial presentation, the discussion starter explained that Indonesia’s economic growth continues to show resilience with positive figures, even though the direction remains “cloudy.” Household consumption remains the main pillar of national economic growth. Meanwhile, the digital sector, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and the creative industry continue to record rapid development.
However, the discussion starter also highlighted serious challenges. Global geopolitical conflicts trigger increases in energy and food prices, while global inflation causes a surge in the prices of imported goods. The government’s subsidy and social assistance policies are considered quite helpful in maintaining people’s purchasing power. On the other hand, issues such as unemployment, economic inequality, and rising basic commodity prices remain homework that must be addressed together.
The discussion was highly interactive. Dozens of students from various study programs at FISIP Undip actively expressed their opinions and asked critical questions. They not only discussed problems but also sought concrete solutions, including the role of the younger generation in driving innovation and MSME development. The event, which lasted approximately two hours, ran smoothly and with great enthusiasm. Participants acknowledged gaining many new insights into national and global economic dynamics.
Building Critical Awareness Among Students
FOCUS 1 activity was initiated as a forum for economic literacy for FISIP Undip students. The moderator opened the forum by emphasizing that understanding the direction of the national economy is no longer merely a matter for pure economics students but a vital element for social and political science students. This is because every economic policy has a direct impact on social stability, public welfare, and the availability of future employment opportunities.
The forum was attended by dozens of students from various study programs who eagerly listened to the presentation from the discussion starter. The presence of expert speakers provided a comprehensive perspective on how national policy instruments intersect with external pressures from the global market.
In the core session of the discussion, the discussion starter explained that the current portrait of Indonesia’s economy shows a fairly admirable level of resilience. Nevertheless, this positive growth is still overshadowed by conditions likened to a “cloudy sky.”
- Domestic Consumption as a Pillar:Â While many developed countries are experiencing slowdowns, Indonesia has been able to survive thanks to strong public consumption. This serves as the main driving engine keeping growth figures in positive territory.
- Acceleration of Digital and Creative Sectors:Â The digital sector, empowerment of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and the creative industry are considered the new engines of growth. Technological transformation has opened the door for local businesses to remain relevant in a competitive market.
- Geopolitical Shocks and Inflation:Â The forum deeply discussed the impact of international geopolitical conflicts that trigger global increases in energy and food prices. The phenomenon of imported inflation poses a real challenge to the purchasing power of the domestic population.
- The Role of Subsidies and Social Safety Nets:Â Government policies through the distribution of subsidies and social assistance were evaluated as crucial tactical steps to maintain consumption stability at the grassroots level.
The event, which lasted approximately two hours, was not one-way. The Q&A session became a moment for students to raise critical questions regarding educated unemployment, persistent economic inequality, and strategies to cope with rising basic commodity prices that are increasingly burdensome.
The discussion evolved into a collaborative search for solutions. Participants underscored the importance of the role of the younger generation, especially FISIP students, to act as a communication bridge between government policies and societal needs. Furthermore, developing innovation in the MSME sector is considered the most realistic strategy that young people can adopt to directly contribute to the national economy.
Overall, Forum Discussion (FOCUS) 1 ran smoothly and conducively. The high enthusiasm from participants showed that awareness of macroeconomic issues has grown among students. The organizing committee hopes that FOCUS 1 can become a regular agenda that continues to voice contemporary socio-economic issues.
With a more mature understanding of the direction of economic growth, FISIP Undip students are expected not only to be spectators but also to be able to prepare themselves to face an increasingly competitive job market and make real contributions to the future development of the Indonesian nation.
The FOCUS 1 committee hopes that similar activities can continue to be held regularly. With deeper understanding, students are expected to be able to prepare themselves to face an increasingly competitive job market and contribute to the nation’s economic development.
