UNDIP Global Classroom MBA to Examine Individual Work Behavior Through ASEAN Cultural Perspectives

Semarang – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), through its Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program, hosted the UNDIP Global Classroom session titled “Individual Work Behavior: Case Studies on ASEAN Countries” on Wednesday, April 6, 2026. The event, conducted online via Zoom Meeting, was an integral component of the Organizational Theory and Behavior course within the MBA curriculum.

The session featured Dr. Hoang Dam Luong Thuy from Vietnam National University as the keynote speaker, alongside Robetmi Jumpakita Pinem, Ph.D., from Universitas Diponegoro, who served as the discussant. The forum provided participants with critical insights into how national cultures shape individual behavior within organizations, particularly across ASEAN member states.

In her presentation, Dr. Hoang underscored the importance of understanding local cultural contexts in managing cross-border organizations. Focusing on Vietnam, she highlighted that collectivism, respect for hierarchical structures, and the gradual development of workplace relationships serve as foundational elements for fostering effective organizational collaboration.

A central theme of her lecture was that Vietnam’s work culture is deeply influenced by collectivist values and hierarchical respect. In practice, employees tend to prioritize group harmony, defer to authority, and regard loyalty and long-term relationships as essential components of professional life. Furthermore, structured work environments, clear directives, and trust-building leadership were identified as key drivers of organizational effectiveness.

The webinar also addressed generational dynamics within Vietnam’s workforce. Older generations typically emphasize stability, deference to authority, and job security. In contrast, younger workers exhibit greater technological adaptability, openness to change, and a strong drive for self-development and career mobility.

Through this event, MBA students gained valuable perspectives on the necessity of cultural sensitivity in managing international organizations. A nuanced understanding of cross-cultural differences is considered essential for aspiring leaders and business professionals seeking to build effective communication, make sound decisions, and foster productive collaboration in global work environments.

The UNDIP Global Classroom initiative reflects FISIP Universitas Diponegoro’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international learning, broadening students’ academic horizons, and preparing graduates to meet the organizational and business challenges of both regional and global stages.
